Branded Licensing to Represent Linda Hoetink
Rooted in the Non-traditional and Perfectly Imperfect
When Linda was seven, her family moved to a very respectable neighborhood just outside The Hague, The Netherlands. Gardens were orderly, lawns manicured, curtains cream-colored. Her parents decided to paint the living room walls of their new home bright fire-engine red. They chose a deep yellow and black for the side room. They did not hire a decorator to do the work but covered the furniture in bedsheets, climbed a ladder with a paint bucket, tray, and roller on a long stick, and painted the ceiling red, too! Her clean white bed sheets became flecked with little red, yellow and black splatters. At times, she wished their decor was more normal and conventional (not filled with a daring mix of antique and modern furniture and abstract art against a backdrop of unexpected color combinations). As she got older; Linda came to appreciate her parent's easy artistic flair and realize how much their bold, gutsy choices influenced her aesthetic - colorful, Ioose, and eclectic. She hung my mother's cast-off 1960s YSL skirt with its striking green, black, and red geometric pattern on the wall of her first painting studio in Amsterdam, where she studied Fine Arts, and it has traveled with Linda on moves to London and Boston as well. She has since exchanged her canvases for different surfaces but her process, whether she is designing for tea towels or bedding or wall coverings, is always rooted in the physicality of the art materials, emphasizing a hand-drawn, artisanal quality. Slight imperfections add to the narrative of her designs, giving them a sense of subtle surprise - just like the thrill she got as a child when Linda discovered those little flecks of paint from the living room on the corner of her bedsheets.
